The long suffering marshals deserve the plaudits at the end of Sunday’s kart racing meeting at Jurby Airfield. It was the fifth round of the IOM Kart Racing Association’s Manx Metals sponsored summer series but the conditions were anything but summerlike with strong winds and light rain throughout the day.
Junior TKM four-stroke class saw some intense racing between Manx Motorsport Youth Trust recipient Andrew Johnson and competitor Andrew Hughes with the latter driver claiming all three heats, but it was Johnson who started second on the grid in the final who went on to take the lead before the end of the first lap and led every lap of the race to take the chequered flag in front of Hughes to win by 00.49 seconds and Chris Moore took the third spot. The fastest lap honours went to Andrew Johnson with a 54.09s.
The Honda Cadet class saw some great racing throughout the heats with Alex Maxwell claiming the first two heats and Marie Crowe the third. Starting pole Alex Maxwell led every lap of the race to take the chequered flag in front of Marie Crowe and Andreas Gutzold. The fastest lap was set by Crowe in 62.77s
The Honda Junior class saw Damien Crowe lead all the way throughout the heats and final and also setting the fastest lap of 59.70s. He was followed over the line by Chris Mealin and Sam Coombes in third.
World Formula, Honda Senior and Honda Senior Heavies were a combined class with Brian Drummond winning the World Formula class. Lee Freestone claimed all three heats and final in the Honda Senior class, he also recorded the fastest lap of 59.87 seconds followed by Guy Ellison and Wayne Freestone in third. Gary Ellison took the first and third heats in the Honda Senior Heavy class with Dave Gaggs claiming the third, final honours went to Gary Ellison closely followed by Dave Gaggs and Mathew Crowe. Ellison set the fastest lap of 59.79s.
The Rotax Max 125 and 177 drivers combined forces, Daniel Crossley won all three heats in the 125 class and the overall final in the combined class ahead of Chris Shortall and Mark Cubbon. Crossley set the fastest lap of the day 49.69s. Daniel Emms claimed the first heat in the 177 class and Stephen Gregg the second and third and the final honours went to Stephen Gregg also setting the fastest lap of 50.57s closely followed by Daniel Emms and novice driver Andrew Wilson.
Thanks go to Clerk of the Course Martin Blackburn and all the officials, marshals and paramedic. The next meeting is Sunday July 13th with racing starting around 11am. Spectators welcome.
